Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I begin?
With as little as one resource, or as much as a whole school curriculum’s worth of support!
SALT resources are designed to be matched to any school curriculum or sacramental program, or for use by catechists, parents and homeschoolers. There are also many grandparents who choose to build their own libraries – often starting with just one item. A beautiful example is the Baptism Kit for use with siblings when a new addition to the family is born, a parable box to dive deeper into a particular theme, or the Jerusalem model to explore the events of Holy Week. If you are interested in seeing how your school curriculum can be matched with SALT materials, contact us at enquiries@saltapproach.org. There is no cost for this curriculum matching exercise.
Do I need training?
SALT was designed to support users without the need for formal training.
Demonstration videos for teachers, catechists and parents exist on The Learning Hub. In addition, weekly children's liturgy videos are released, and the matching booklets are downloadable. The pedagogy is further explored on the SALT Training page. These video supports, together with the Presentation Guides that come with the materials, are very empowering. Our experience is that people jump straight in without any additional assistance. For parishes and schools who use the SALT Sacramental programs for the first time, we can conduct an introductory session prior to commencement. This can be in person or by zoom and usually takes a few hours as we run through the catechist manuals, student workbooks, and accompanying materials. We do not charge for this, although a donation is always appreciated!
I am a teacher and would like to use SALT in my school. Do I need to buy everything?
Not at all. We have large dioceses using just a few materials, like the Mass Kit and Magnetic Maps in every classroom.
Is SALT like Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?
CGS users often ask about how we are different. They recognize the Montessorian roots and understand the power of the pedagogy. For this reason, we are sometimes confused with being CGS.
Of course, CGS is great! In fact, there are a number of Atriums that have chosen to include SALT resources as part of their catechesis with the children.
How is The SALT Approach different?
Some of the key differences include:
- Ready made materials: The practicality of asking teachers, catechists and parents to make the materials don’t suit all situations, and the quality can be variable. SALT resources are high quality, durable and remain with schools and parishes as an enduring resource regardless of staffing movements.
- The breadth of materials: Because SALT was born in schools, it covers the major topics of a full K-6 RE curriculum.
- The ability to match the materials with any school curriculum or Sacramental program: SALT resources have been matched with many programs and used to introduce this powerful, hands-on pedagogy to a wide variety of circumstances and locations.
- Presentation Guides: The guides empower any presenter and recognise that knowledge-gaps need to be supported with clear doctrine and presentation guidelines.
- Practical storage and mobility: SALT materials are designed to be packed up and stored on shelves if desired. Whilst a dedicated room is very valuable, it is not always possible, and not essential when using SALT resources.
- Training: SALT’s aim is to make this powerful pedagogy, first created by Maria Montessori, an achievable way of teaching the faith in all circumstances, and at no cost beyond the purchase of the resources themselves. As such, it was designed to support users without the need for formal training. Demonstration videos for teachers, catechists and parents exist on the Learning Hub. In addition, weekly children’s liturgy videos are released, and the matching booklets are downloadable. The pedagogy is further explored on the SALT Training page located on the website. These video supports, together with the Presentation Guides that come with the materials, are very empowering. Our experience is that people jump straight in without any additional assistance.
How did SALT come about?
The SALT Approach grew out of a 5-year PhD doctorate conducted by Dr Anne-Marie Irwin. The study itself took place over one year in a very typical Year 2 classroom in a systemic Catholic primary school. In that setting, and under the supervision of Dr Gerard O’Shea at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney, she applied the pedagogy of Montessori and Cavaletti. Anne-Marie’s aim was to identify what would be needed for this pedagogy to be effective in mainstream Catholic classrooms with all their circumstances and challenges. Each iteration of the study pinpointed specific needs.
During the study, the growth in the children’s and teachers’ knowledge and faith, the stories of conversion, and the apostolic opportunities created with the parents was remarkable. At the end of the study, word got around, other schools were interested, and Anne-Marie felt strongly called to continue. In 2017 she took on the challenge to provide schools with what they needed to implement The S.A.L.T. (Scripture & Liturgy Teaching) Approach effectively. In early 2023, it was registered as a not-for-profit company in Australia and has since grown to support both schools and parishes with RE curriculum, children’s liturgy, Sunday school, the Sacraments, and has extended from Australia to the USA, UK and EU.

Can I purchase just the presentation guides without the kits?
